Angeline W Johnson

Child, Young People & Family Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

Hello, I am Angeline, a licensed and insured Psychodynamic Psychotherapist based in Walthamstow, working with Children, Young People and families.

Family life comes with a lot of rewarding and challenging moments. You, your child or young person may be experiencing some emotional worries and may feel unsure how to navigate.

Some of these worries may include and not limited to managing emotions, relationship difficulties, coping in school, college or university, transitions in moving from a different country and making sense of identity. Having a space to explore these worries at your own pace and develop your capacity to manage everyday life may be what you need.

In our work, I will use my training, work and life experience to offer you a listening ear, support and empowerment to reach your goals.

About Me

About Me

The professional experience I have is drawn from working with children, young people and families in residential, community, NHS and school settings for the last 15 years.

My training includes a Masters degree in Psychological Therapies with Children, Young People and Families and a Post Graduate Certificate in Child, Adolescent & Family Mental Wellbeing.

My interest in psychotherapy developed from observing family dynamics from a personal and professional perspective and wanting to understand how families could develop their emotional capacity and have healthier relationships.

I am a registered member of the British Psychoanalytic Council, Tavistock Society of Psychotherapists and BAATN and adhere to their ethical standards. I also work with a Clinical supervisor and keep up to date with continuous professional development.

I specialise in helping children, young people up to the age of 25 and families in the following areas:

  • Relationship difficulties
  • Coping in school
  • Anxiety
  • Low mood
  • Self-harm
  • Trauma
  • Making sense of identity
  • Transitions through school, college and university & managing academic stress
  • Acculturation stress associated with immigration

Children Young People and Families

Children Young People and Families

Children

I work with children aged 4-12 face to face. Our meetings will be in a child friendly room where children can express themselves through play, storytelling and art. My work is paced following the child's lead and developmental stage to support them voice their feelings and wishes.

Initially, I start with a block of four sessions which include a joint session with a parent/caregiver at the beginning. In this period both the child/family and myself will take the opportunity to explore if we can work well together and how long for. I may offer short-term (up to 12 sessions) or long-term psychotherapy which will come to an end after mutual agreement.

Sessions may be individual or joint with parents, and this is determined by individual circumstances.

Young People

Adolescence and young adulthood are a crucial stage of development where there is a need to foster healthy independence and skills needed for life. There also a lot of demands to find one's place in the world with friends and a career. Having someone independent from family, friends and educators to explore this period and it's pressures provides the path for positive personality development.

Young people aged 13-25 can meet with me in person or online. If under 16, young people may have an initial meeting with me and their parents and if we agree to work together, we can book an initial block of four individual or joint sessions to start with.

Young people over 16 can contact me directly and access therapy sessions on their own behalf. We will start with an initial block of four sessions after which we can determine if short-term (up to 12 sessions) or long-term psychotherapy is needed.

Families & Parents

I offer parents/caregivers consultations and review meetings as it is essential for parents to be closely involved in my work with children and young people up to the age of 16. I can offer parent consultations as a standalone offer. Parents usually use consultations as an opportunity to explore if Psychotherapy is needed for their children and family. Depending on individual circumstances this may be one or more sessions.

In addition I also offer short term or long term parent sessions to support parents with various issues. This may be alongside work with their children or young people.

How I work

How I work

Once you get in touch, I will offer you a free 15-minute initial consultation. On agreement to work together you can book a block of four sessions where we will get know each other. In the initial sessions, we will decide together the goals you would like to meet and work out how many sessions you may need.

Sessions

Face to face sessions will happen in a confidential space for 50 minutes each week. An initial joint parent and child session need longer than 50 minutes and I usually offer 90 minutes. In the room you can expect art materials, toys and a sand tray.

My therapy room is located 5 minutes' walk from Blackhorse Road underground station.

If we are working online, I will urge you to find a comfortable and confidential space that ensures you are free to express yourself and keep your information private. Where possible it is encouraged to use the same room each week.

Fees

  • Initial joint child and parent(s)/caregiver(s) - 90 minutes - £100
